Subject:Please Donate to my Team In Training Page
Time:10:48 am.
Hello Friends,

I just wanted to let you all know that I'm raising money for this very important cause, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. I'm running in The Marine Corps Marathon in memory of my cousin, who passed at the young age of 19. I'm not asking for much, just what your heart can give. If it's a penny, I'll take it, because every little contribution helps.

Above: My cousin, Andrew Yuen

Please take the time to visit the link in this email to view my page and to donate online. You will receive email confirmation of your donation and I will be notified as soon as you make your donation. I thank you in advance for your support, and really appreciate your generosity!!

Please forward this email to as many people as you can to encourage them to donate as well!

Signed,
Alfred Wang

Asian marrow donor makes her mark on community

By: Winyan Soo Hoo

Above:
A volunteer fills out a registration form for bone marrow donation at the Chinese Bible Church of Maryland. Registration is a simple process, where individual cheek swabs are sent to NIH labs.

Above:
Ida Wang stands with a friend at the Chinese Bible Church of Maryland. Wang has worked with the Asian community for more than 15 years to promote bone marrow donation.

It’s been almost 15 years since Ida Wang began her tireless effort to bring more Asian Americans bone marrow donors. At 58, Wang hasn’t stopped traveling around the DC-area to dispel myths associated with donating marrow. She recently held one of her several bone marrow drives in conjunction with NIH at the Chinese Bible Church of Maryland (CBCM). Wang comes across as a helpful, but driven friend: she easily speaks one-on-one to potential donors and often wakes up early before drives to put up signs and banners that promote the cause.

At CBCM, she put up a poster board crammed with photos of the various drives she’s completed and the friends she has met over the years. Eyes reddening and faintly tearing, Wang quietly also pointed out pictures of leukemia patients who they could or could not save from the disease.

“Their stories still make me cry,” Wang said.

Wang is no stranger to the pain and intense emotion that comes with the prospect of a life-threatening disease. Her nephew Andrew died in 1992 at the age of 17 from leukemia. A year later, Wang coped with the loss by founding the non-profit D.C.- Metropolitan Asian Pacific American Marrow Network. She also helped start the Andrew Lee/Yuen Memorial Fund after meeting another young boy named “Andrew” that suffered the disease.

When Wang first started her work, Asian registry was at a low 3.2 percent. Some of her family members were repulsed by the idea of Wang championing a drive, and said the thought of the disease made the grieving worse.

One family member even asked her to remain silent, but Wang pressed on: in her first year of volunteering she helped organize 11 drives. By retirement from her day job, Wang could complete 64 drives in one year.

“The biggest challenge is to get others as committed to the cause as you are, unless they are personally affected or are paid volunteers,” Wang said. “I, personally, do not receive any compensation for my work.”

CBCM member Stephen Chan helped Wang coordinate the drive at the church in April. Although he has never known anyone who suffered from the disease, Chan said he was influenced by personal and religious beliefs to donate.

“Supporting a bone marrow drive is a good thing for us to do,” Chan said. “I want to help give life to others. I believe that if someone matches my bone marrow, they can benefit from me. It’s not going to hurt me, and possibly it can make me stronger by doing it.”

Allen Meadows of the NIH Marrow Program said he appreciates volunteers like Chan, but recognizes that willing Asian donors are uncommon.

“We need minorities, minorities, minorities,” Meadows said. “Asians we need desperately. I can’t stress that enough. Caucasians are overrepresented in our system.”

Wang emphasized that Asians are generally fearful of blood and come up with many excuses to avoid becoming a donor. She explains that marrow is the substance found in larger bones in the body that help produce blood cells. Potential donors join the registry by a simple cheek swab that will be sent to NIH labs. More information is available at: http://www.marrow.org.

“If you have Internet access, you must look at this Web site,” Meadows said. “It dispels a lot of the myths people have about this process: it’s not painful; you can’t get bone cancer from it. If someone is really nervous about it, you can always get accurate information by calling one of us at NIH personally.”

The coordinator of the NIH bone marrow donation program is a registered nurse, and will walk a donor through the entire donation process. Most of the local donations are completed in the Washington metropolitan area, with two main locations at the NIH campus and at the Georgetown Hospital in D.C. If contacted, donors may not necessarily become a potential match.

“It’s not as scary as it sounds,” said David Morgan also of NIH Marrow Program. “We often hear that our volunteers – regardless of race and ethnicity – describe the process as anti-climatic.

Only when a match is found does a donor give blood. The donor must undergo a stay at the hospital, where doctors use a needle to extract a pint of marrow from the pelvic bone.

“Blood marrow donation is not as well-known as blood donation,” Meadows said. “I have a desire to try to publicize it. Try to think about how you would feel if it happened to one of your family members.”

Meadows speaks enthusiastically about the program as part of NIH’s recruitment and donor management team. Although he has spent 4 years with the program, Meadows said the first he understood the gravity of the situation was when his cousin was diagnosed with Leukemia last July.

Wang said she identifies with the pain that many family members feel about the battle against diseases, such as leukemia, aplastic anemia and other life-threatening blood diseases that only bone marrow transplants can cure. For more than 8 years, Wang organizes an annual fundraising dinner, Banquet for Life the first week of October at China Garden. This year, volunteers may help Wincheng Lin in the battle against Leukemia. Wincheng is a young Chinese American MIT undergrad in remission waiting for a match.

“I hope we can get more people in the Asian community to be involved,” Wang said. “Everyone should do something wonderful while their alive.”
